They left label J Records and decided to release to album themselves, since the certainly have enough money to do that. They also hooked up with '90s Alternative Rock producer du jour Brendan O'Brien (Korn, Bruce Springsteen), the first time that the band has worked with O'Brien since 1998's Yield. The music on the record features a sound influenced by Pop and New Wave.

Clocking in at just 25 minutes, the latest Pearl Jam tape has more in common with Thriller than epic Who. What was Eddie Vedder thinking, and who is his manager? Where once these guys ruled Rome, now they're being fed to the lions by the rulers of Target and Venture (a store made popular by 1980s fashion, for those that don't know). But hey, Ed Vedder still has a pretty decent growl when he can rouse himself out of bed on a sunny Seattle morning by the sea.
Has anybody seen Chris Cornell or the dude from The Cars? Maybe they could set things right.

I love this album. Every song is great. Is it their old stuff, no but that's okay. Pearl Jam have managed to evolve and last over the years which many bands have failed to do. Sure they've lost some of their crowd but at least their around. Their live shows are incredible and worth going to see.

I've only been a fan of Pearl Jam for a couple of years, and knowing that a new album was coming out, I got very excited. "Backspacer" is tied with "Riot Act" for 2nd worst album in front of only "Binaural", yet it's still a great album. I love everything they've put out (except "Binaural"), and "Backspacer" doesn't disappoint.
"I'm Gonna See My Friend" - 4/5
Uninteresting at first listen, but it's really grown on me. It's catchy, and has great power chords, but what really makes the song is the harmonized vocals during the main refrain.
"Got Some" - 5/5
Best song on the album, and one of the best songs in Pearl Jam's catalog. The composition is really cool, and you'll find yourself singing the chorus to yourself for hours (and you won't get annoyed.)
"The Fixer" - 5/5
The first single off the album. When I first heard this song I was unimpressed, and for the next month until the album came out I went back in forth between loving it and hating it. When the album came out and I heard everything as a whole, I started to really like this song. I love the time changes, the fuzzy verse riff, and the poppy chorus.
"Johnny Guitar" - 4/5
I found myself really loving this song the first time, but after repeated listens, it's starting to bore me.
"Just Breathe" - 3.5/5
Tough song. Good song/bad song. I really, really like this song, the official bootlegs and the SNL performance were great, but I really dislike the mix on this album. The flutes make the song sound cheesey and contrived, and the loud bass doesn't fit the song at all, but the song itself is great. 5/5 song, 2/5 mix. If you want to hear a good version, I suggest going to Pearl Jam's website and downloading one of their official bootlegs.
"Amongst the Waves" - 3/5
Much like "Johnny Guitar", I really liked this song when I first heard it, but it's beginning to bore me. It's catchy, but overall unsatisfying.
"Unthought Known" - 5/5
Great, great, great song. The slow build-up makes "Unthought Known" an instant Pearl Jam classic. I don't know why they picked "Amongst the Waves" as a single instead of this.
"Supersonic" - 2/5
Worst song on the album annoying and stupid lyrics, sorry guys nice try.
"Speed of Sound" - 3/5
Very average. Not too interesting, definitely not a bad song, but there's nothing about it that makes me want to listen again.
"Force of Nature" - 5/5
Another amazing song. The song can only be described in one word--epic. Along with "Got Some" and "Unthought Known", another candidate for new Pearl Jam classic.
"The End" - 4/5
Interesting, dark song, It's kind of a downer to end an album on, but it's still a great song. The way the guitar and vocals are paired creates an eerie vibe.
Overall, a great album, but not recommended to a new Pearl Jam fan. Start of with something like "Yield" or "Vs."

Force of Nature, Unknown Thought, Speed of Sound, and Amongst the Waves, are going to be classics...
Force of Nature is my favorite PJ music composition since a few tracks of Ten...
Matt Cameron is phenomenal, if you get to listen to these tracks live, they are mindblowing!
